A 5 × 10 ft classroom bed will never pay for itself in produce, and any supplier who tells you otherwise is selling you a number rather than a machine. The harvest is real and students should eat it, but it is not the return.

The return is teaching hours. Edenix is the one piece of equipment in the lab that covers mechanics, electronics, programming, data handling and soil science at the same time, and it keeps running a live experiment when the students have gone home. So the honest measure is what it costs to put a student in front of it.

The Working

• One-time cost ₹4,99,000 including GST, with delivery, on-site installation, calibration, curriculum and staff training included
• Ten-year service life. Conservative for an aluminium frame kept indoors, and we hold spare parts for seven years
• No subscription and no software renewal, so nothing recurring is hidden in these figures
• Excludes the optional AMC. The AMC is available from month 7 at ₹20,000 a year, so covering the full ten years takes ten annual terms — ₹2,00,000. That puts the ten-year total at ₹6,99,000, or ₹466 per student at 150 students a year. The AMC is optional; the system does not stop working without it
• Running cost is negligible — roughly ₹45 a month of electricity

What we took out of this page

• An earlier version projected produce savings on a much larger bed and counted labour twice — once as a cost saving and again as “value of your time”. That inflated the headline by roughly 60% and has been removed rather than restated.
• We have not published a payback period. For a classroom bed at this size it would be a number we could not defend, and a finance committee would be right to challenge it.
